Slackline is Life...

Slackline Projects in Peru

By: Rosa Tokumoto

Has this ever happened to you? You walk by a park and see a group of kids on some slacklines. Then you stop to watch them because you think you are watching a circus.

Well, it happened to me and I not only stopped to watch but I also went to figured out what was going on. A friend of mine was actually with that group of kids and invited me to try slacklining and since I love trying new things I went for it.

Slackline is Life is a local project, that gives free slackline workshops. Choza and I offer workshops every Sunday in Vía Recreativa del Parque Grau, San Borja, Lima - Peru.

Slackline is Life started about a year and a half ago and we are committed to promoting slacklining for free and here is our story.

To start off, Peru does not have many sports programs. It is unfortunate for us that when we practice in public parks people think we are harming the trees or would just prefer us to not be there.

To fight this, we put together a presentation for our project asking to be accepted as part of the Sunday activities that are already in place for the community. This way, the local police, park guards or even the neighbors cannot file a complaint to kick us out.

We knocked the doors of local of a few cities, some said no but others were open to the idea, but needed payment. In the end, the only one that embraced the idea was San Borja, which has a reputation of promoting sports.

Fast forward to today, Slackline is Life works with people of all ages and many of them go every Sunday to the workshops. Some come every now and then because they are looking to have fun and try new things.

Is really gratifying to know we can share slacklining through Slackline is Life, and the project has become self sustainable. We can promote the sport to more people and without any trouble.

I also wanted to take the opportunity to thank personally Slackline Industries for their support to this project. Thanks to them, Slackline is Life has new equipment like the Play Line and Base Line for all the people interested in this sport.

So you know that if you are ever in Peru, you are very welcome to slackline every Sunday from 10a-12p at Via Recreativa del Parque Grau en San Borja, Lima-Peru.

See you on the slackline!
